Why do we need more frugal AI? This summer was marked by countless, unprecedented European heatwaves, whilst the USA continues to double its data centre capacity, often powered by gas (more on that here).
This rampant buildout – which 71% of Americans currently oppose – wouldn’t be necessary if we used AI more carefully, efficiently and… frugally.
And yet we continue to jump on the latest versions of Claude or ChatGPT, even when they’re 200 times bigger – and more resource-consuming – than our needs (more on that here).
This is why I launched the “Frugal AI – State of the Art” training course just under a year ago, with GreenIT.fr. Since then, it’s been followed by staff from Groupe La Poste (the 220k-employee company behind France’s postal service), consultants Sopra Steria, insurance companies Groupama or Groupe Covéa and sustainability experts The Shift Project, to name just a few.
But not everyone has the time, nor the resources, to commit to a full day of training. So, in keeping with one of my major north stars of spreading these messages as far and wide as possible, I’m giving away a bite-sized (30 minute) version of my course, via training platform Maven.

The lesson explains, in just 12 slides:
⚡️ Why generative AI is so impactful on the environment
⚡️ How to challenge usage of “bigger is better” models like ChatGPT or Claude
⚡️ The keys to Frugal AI: how to use and deploy AI with hundredfold less planetary (and financial) costs…
It’s an ideal way to take your first steps towards frugal AI; the aforementioned keys will set you on your way to using AI without costing the earth. If, of course, you do need AI in the first place (working that out is indeed step one of frugal AI!)
I should also insist the course is guilt-free 😇; it’s not your fault that the most-used AI tools are so impactful. But you do have the power to use them, or alternatives, more frugally.
This Lightning Lesson takes place on September 17, at 3pm CET.
You can sign up for it for free here.
If you can’t make it then, sign up anyway 😬 Replay and slides will be available afterwards.
See you then; and feel free to spread the word. The more the merrier!
